Ultrasound Devices: Animal Away™ About Ultrasonic Controllers: Raccoons, opossums, skunks, armadillos, gophers, dogs, and cats can hear these devices but people can’t. So when these animals are exposed to their irritating or loud sounds they tend to stay away–just like you wouldn’t buy an apartment near a busy airport if you had a choice. The products listed won’t effectively evict racoons living in a house or other structure, but they can greatly reduce the chances of new squatters moving in. Both outdoors and indoors, ultrasound is blocked or reduced by obstructions (it is completely blocked by walls)–so ultrasound devices work better in clear yards than in cluttered landscapes, and in open attics rather than in ones studded with cartons or partitioned by dividers. Animal Away™ Ultrasonic Repeller
This device has an effective range of 30 feet and a sound emission frequency of 23 Khz (inaudible to people). It works off a single 9-volt battery (not included), is suited to both indoor and outdoor use, and effectively repels dogs and cats as well as raccoons. Animal Away’s motion detector causes its ultrasound generator to operate only when motion is detected, thus extending the battery’s life and keeping target animals from becoming accustomed to its sound. The product comes with a 6-month limited manufacturer’s warranty. Yard Gard: ultrasonic repeller, AC or battery powered yard and garden protector by Bird-X
A strong and versatile ultrasound generator designed for both indoor and outdoor use, the Yard Gard can repel raccoons, squirrels, dogs, cats, skunks, deer, armadillos, opossums, rats, bats and other animals without disturbing birds or fish. Well-suited to protecting yards, gardens, patios, porches, greenhouses, garages, and building interiors, the weatherproof Yard Gard covers an area of up to 4,000 square feet and is easily mounted on a pole or flat vertical surface by means of keyhole slots at the back of the unit. The powerful (100+ decibels at 3 feet) ultrasound emitted by the Yard Gard can be adjusted to a wide range of frequencies (15,000 to 25,000 Hz) to deal with specific creatures. Powered either by 4 "C" cell batteries (not included) or by AC current, the Yard Gard comes with a 30-foot extension cord and a 110 volt AC adapter that has its own 6-foot cord. If set to operate intermittently (in either battery or AC mode) the unit will only generate ultrasound when its motion sensor detects movement within the sensor's 35 x 70 foot range. However, the unit can also be set to emit sound continuously if it is working in AC mode. Some people with good high frequency hearing can hear the unit at its low (marginally sonic) frequency settings, but this situation can be resolved by selecting higher settings. Raccoon EvictorT/ Squirrel EvictorT MB10K and MB100K Strobe Lights, also Effective against Squirrels and Roof Rats
The raccoon evictorT/ squirrel evictorT MB10K and MB100K are high intensity strobe lights that live up to their names-raccoons, squirrels, roof rats, and other home invaders hate them. Unlike ultrasound, which provides mostly backup support for indoor raccoon control (especially insurance against re-infestation), these are attack devices. Raccoons being highly visual, they find the raccoon evictorT MB10K and MB100K grossly offensive, intolerable in fact, and they commonly leave established nests in as little as 24 hours. So in most cases where there is an attic or basement space that the resident animals must pass through to enter or leave the building, they can be evicted. In many cases this means that raccoons, squirrels, or roof rats with nests hidden between floors or in walls can be forced to leave those nests and your home by placing one of these devices in an area they must pass through to get food or water. They won't be harmed, just annoyed to a point where they will leave. The raccoon evictor MB10K, covers 900 square feet of floor space with its flashing light (a 30 x 30 foot area) and the MB100K covers at least 1600 square feet, probably more (at least a 40 x 40 foot area). Both devices need a reasonably uncluttered working area to prevent the light from being blocked. Nor will their light go through walls or around large corners; so more than one unit may be needed in areas with walls, multiple rooms, or L-shaped spaces. Even so, these are useful, aggressive, and harmless animal control devices that get around the need for labor-intensive trapping. In many cases of chronic raccoon, squirrel, or roof rat infestation they have achieved spectacular results. The devices are portable, environmentally friendly, and energy efficient (the MB10K uses only 12 watts of power). Easy for a homeowner to install, they come with a full set of installation instructions. Because they are long-lasting and economical, they can be kept on permanently once the raccoons, squirrels, or roof rats have decamped to prevent re-infestation. Since their fast-flashing strobes bother people as well as pests, they should only be used in unoccupied interior spaces. People with medical conditions aggravated by strobe lights should definitely avoid exposure; and it is recommended (in order to avoid all human exposure) that one use or install a switch that allows the device to be turned on or off at a place out of range of its light. The units use 120 volt AC current. They involve no chemicals, noise, or odor and produce very little heat. The raccoon evictorT MB10K and MB100K come with a 5-year limited manufacturer's warranty on their hardware and a 1-year warranty on the strobe tube, which has an expected life of 10,000 hours. The MB100K, which is 6.7 times more powerful than the MB10K and produces a million foot candles of light, can cover a substantially larger area than the MB10K. At least marginally effective over a 50 x 50 foot area (2,500 square feet) it is highly effective over 40 x 40 feet. Pest behavior and building structures are so variable that one cannot guarantee complete success in all cases; but there is no question that these devices really work and will evict flying squirrels, grey squirrels, most other squirrels, raccoons, and roof rats under a wide range of indoor conditions. So they offer a sound alternative for those wishing to avoid the time, labor, and uncertainties involved in trapping. Videos: Eviction Demonstration - Ask This Old House |
